Chairman’s Welcome

I would like to welcome you to the Ruthin Flower Show website.

We are still hearing positive comments about how much people enjoyed our show in August 2017 and we intend for the 2018 Show to be an even better one. We have already booked all or most of the events from last year and are looking to have even more exhibitors. There are plans to rearrange the layout of the show to make it more interesting. I would like to thank  everyone who helped to make the 2017 Show such a success.

One of my favourite competitions that we hold is the Garden  competition. For this there are three categories.

1. Best Kept Town Garden. These entries must be from within the Ruthin town area. The garden can be large or small; contain vegetable or flowers in both of pots or Town Area containers  – making it a   beautiful well kept town garden.

2. Best Kept Country Garden. Similar to competition 1.(above), but for gardens outside the town in an area of up to a radius of about 3.5 miles from the town centre. For instance – we would accept entries from Llanrhaeadr, Pwllglas or Clawddnewydd areas.

3. Best Allotment competition. This would simply be the Judge’s choice for the best allotment entry  in the same catchment areas as in the  town and country garden competitions. (see 1. and 2. above)

Look in the schedule or on this website for full details and time to enter as the Judging takes place in the last week of July so that we have the results for Show Day. Entry is free and there are prizes.

However this year we would like to add an extra category. We would like a School category so that any school within the Country garden area can enter. We will ask the judge to consider what the youngsters have done to improve the school environment. This could be running a school garden to grow produce for the canteen or flowers to pick or for show. It could be some planters or flower pots, or hanging baskets, a pond or wildflower garden. Proud enthusiastic pupils could sway the Judge with their knowledge. This will be the first year for this category with not too many entries so those who do enter will stand a good chance.

We have been going out to try and get advertisers for our schedule and for sponsors to support the show. The vast majority of people we have approached have agreed to give their support and we really thank Ruthin Community for the way they are so strongly behind the show. However if anyone would like to advertise or sponsor and we have not approached you we will be very happy to hear from you.

It costs well over £7000 to put the show on and last August with the good weather on show day we got close to breaking even. This is excellent news after the losses the year previous and is due to people turning up on the day and coming through the gate, to advertisers that are in our schedule, to the stall holders who come along on show day with their own specialist products and also to our many sponsors and donors. What great teamwork.

We do have a category where people can become Show Members. There is a low fee but it means we can keep in direct contact with you to tell you about any coffee mornings, or our pop-up shop that we have to try and raise some funds. We also have a Christmas dinner every year, and a trip to a local open garden. We will be putting an application form up on the website in the near future.

This year it is over130 years since the first Ruthin Flower Show was held and, of course, it is an amazing record although there has not been a show each year.

To celebrate this we arranged a lot of new exhibits for our 2017 Show including bringing back the Horse Show and putting on a Dog Show.

I would like to thank a lot of people who have worked so hard to bring the show to you, the Committee with their hours of work, sponsors who are so essential, advertisers who help us to break even or better. We need as much support as possible to keep us in a position to put the show on each year, as there is a considerable cost to bring it all together for the day.

In addition to all this the Show is to be enjoyed; it is so important that you come along and give us your support.
